Marriage and Debt
Plan and communicate with your spouse. Communication should never be lost in a marriage; especially one that is dealing with debt. It’s very important that you talk to your spouse about avoiding or repairing debt problems and how you can ensure that your finances will improve. Create a budget so the two of you will be on the same page as far as how much money can be spent on unnecessary things. Even if the two of you don’t agree on what money should go where, finding compromises that work for the both of you shouldn’t be too difficult. Keep the lines of communication open, especially when you’re dealing with debt in your marriage.
Create Financial Goals. While the two of you are communicating about the money issues, create some sound financial goals that you’re both happy with. You may decide to create a savings or college fund for your children – or even a retirement fund so you will be set when the time comes. Consider taking a percentage out of the monthly income to place in these accounts so you’re continuously saving for important things. By creating financial goals that the both of you are happy with, you will both be working toward the same things and will be more aware of the money that is going out and coming into your home.
Cut Out Unnecessary Spending. One thing the two of you can talk about while you’re creating financial goals is cutting out unnecessary spending. This will help you save even more money and if you have debts – you can use some of the saved money to repair your credit and pay off your debt. If one or the other of you spends more money, there is no need for attacks or arguments. Simply realize that too much unnecessary spending has been happening and agree to cut it out. Consider some awards you can give yourselves if you stick to your budget and financial plan. Perhaps you can enjoy a night out to dinner once a month – dress up and enjoy your night. Whatever works and will keep you motivated in your financial goals.
If you and your spouse are unable to compromise or come to an agreement concerning the finances, ask a professional for help. Whether you get in contact with a credit counseling service or someone else – it’s bound to do the situation some good! Don’t let your marriage be ruined by money – start being proactive today so you can salvage your credit and your marriage!
